PIRANHA KILLER SUSHI
AUSTIN, TX
Restaurant Review by Master Dragon on 06/28/2010
Restaurant Overview
My cousin, Master Francais, was in town for a week to spend some time with me. He had just come from Las Vegas where his Play Time level had been taken to new heights. Anxious to see what Austin had to offer, I took him to a new place for both of us, Piranha Killer Sushi.
Restaurant Atmosphere:
Piranha Killer Sushi has more of an upscale feel to it. What I liked the most about this location was the huge square sushi bar in the center and then a separate bar for drinking and socializing. Also, the decor and lighting gave it a nice soft feel.
Service and Hospitality:
We opted to order at the social bar rather than the sushi bar because we wanted to watch some World Cup action. The bartender, who also doubled as our server, was great. The only knock on the service is, although we were practically the only ones there during lunch hour, it took quite awhile for our food to come out.
Nigiri Sushi From The Menu:
Unagi
Although the Unagi had the better proportions, the size was still too small. Freshness was there.
Salmon
The Salmon was delicious, and although it was a small cut (don't let the zoom lens fool you), the proportion was spot on.
Hamachi
The smaller of the nigiri, I was shocked when it came out. The flavor was a bit bitter, but I'm sure I just got some bad pieces.
Sushi Rolls From The Menu:
Forget about It Roll
In: Masago, scallions, shrimp tempura & ginger cream
Top: Avocado & crawfish
Although Master Francais preferred the other roll, this was my favorite. The sauce and, surprisingly, the crawfish were a great combo. I never thought I'd eat crawfish on sushi, only in the south!
Latino Roll
In: Shrimp tempura, ginger cream sauce, asparagus, cream cheese, cilantro
Top: Asparagus and "crab dynamite" which is thin sliced jalapeno and fresh lime juice.
This roll was tasty! I think we picked the two best rolls on the menu, I just wish these were bigger rolls!
Piranha Killer Sushi All Rolled Up
It's not my favorite place. I mean they didn't do anything wrong, but for the location and the effort in the decor, I felt they could have been more generous with the size of the rolls and nigiri. If you're going to be downtown, I expect you to wow a customer.
