You can try out different variations of vegetables, fish and even eggs to make sushi. This is a favorite and popular form of food because it is easy to make and keeps you in good health. Ever wondered how sushi came into its current popular form? Then let us delve into its history for an insight.

Sushi is a culinary art form believed to have originated in China and later came to Japan. The history of Sushi dates back to the 7th Century. The popularity of sushi grew alarmingly high and soon it became a world wide popular food item. People began to try out sushi in its various forms because of its nutritional content. The three main ingredients involved in making sushi are boiled rice, vegetables and cooked or raw fish. The rice in the sushi provides a complex carbohydrate, the vegetables a rich source of nutrients and the fish an excellent storehouse of omega-3 fatty acids.

Long before refrigerators were discovered the Chinese learned the art of preserving fish. The fish that were caught were cleaned, filleted and then covered with layers of salt and placed below a heavy weight of stone. The fish would remain that way for perhaps weeks on end and later the stone was replaced with a light cover. The fish thus preserved was kept fermented for at least two months in layers of salt. Later they discovered that rice soaked with vinegar was good for rolling fish meant to be preserved. The fish was kept in this manner for a few days and then the rice was thrown out and the fish consumed. But later food shortage caused people to consume the rice soaked in vinegar along with the fish. This is the crudest form of sushi available today.

Sushi became popular because of its fine ingredients and the health value that goes with it. It is low in fat and contains lots of minerals and vitamins. It is very easy to prepare sushi and in the taste department sushi scores high. The art of making different types of sushi rolls are taught by master chefs at culinary institutes and cooking schools. Take a course and you can try it out at home; your kids may love the variations in their diet.
You can make mouth-watering sushi dishes by varying the ingredients too. Some of the mouth-watering sushi recipes taught by culinary experts are California Sushi roll, Crunchy sushi roll, nigri (finger) sushi, rainbow sushi roll, nori crab rolls, smoked salmon and asparagus roll, tuna sushi roll, vegetable hand roll, crayfish sushi and shrimp sushi. As you will notice the difference is in the ingredients and how much each is used.

You should try your hand at making these dishes. You will be amazed at how easy you can make a nutritious and delicious dish. All sushi dishes have rice and vinegar in common. You can try it out with any ingredients you think would be nice. Here in this post I will explain to you how to make a tasty sushi roll with 10 or more ingredients. Try out the California sushi roll. The main ingredients of course are rice and vinegar. The variation of ingredients that we are using here are toasted sheets of nori seaweed, crabmeat cut in pieces, avocado peeled and cut in fine pieces, radish sprouts peeled and cucumber with the seeds removed and cut in fine strips. Using seaweed would be a good idea because seaweed is rich in iodine. You can use toasted sesame seeds on top of the sushi. Make some Crunchy sushi rolls after making the California rolls, the difference being the addition of an extra ingredient. Just open up a California roll and add some fried tempura batter to it. Instead of these ingredients you can try out some fresh salmon to make rainbow sushi rolls. For a variation, try it with tuna, smoked salmon, crayfish or shrimp. For a different taste, you can use asparagus and daikon sprouts, available in Asian markets.

Take note of the culinary equipment you need to make sushi. It would be a good idea to use wooden utensils when you go to make sushi. You can begin by taking Handai and Shamoji. Do not be scared by the terms. Handai is a large wooden tub and Shamoji a wooden spatula with which you can mix the cooked rice with the vinegar. You need a paper-made fan, which goes by the term Uchiwa. With the help of this fan, you can cool the rice mixture. The breeze from the fan helps in evaporating the excess steam and vinegar. Use some really sharp knives to cut and fillet the fish. You should also have a bamboo mat called a makisu to roll the sushi in.
